The Mustang Blu: Ananda Chalardcharoen's Iconic Hotel in Bangkok's Chinatown
When it comes to travelling, our choice of accommodation is as diverse as our individual preferences. Some prioritise convenience and location, while others seek out the latest trendy spots. Yet, there are rare finds that excel in all aspects, like Mustang Blu, nestled near Bangkok's Jim Thompson House. With its stunning and unique visual appeal, The Mustang Blu impresses visitors from the moment they step through its doors. Situated amidst the vibrant streets of Chinatown in Bangkok, renowned for its kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and flavours, The Mustang Blu offers an experience that transcends the typical hotel stay, especially for those with a discerning eye for aesthetics. Its remarkable fusion of historical charm and contemporary elegance sets it apart, offering travellers a truly unforgettable moment in the heart of Thailand's bustling capital.
A Historical Transformation: Exploring the Enigmatic Charms of Mustang Blu
Upon opening the main door and stepping inside for check-in, guests are greeted by an ambiance reminiscent of a museum, invoking a sense of curiosity and wonder. The rich history of Mustang Blu adds depth to its appeal. Once a neglected bank building in dire need of restoration, the property underwent a remarkable transformation under the visionary guidance of Ananda Chalardcharoen, the owner and creative force behind the establishment. Beyond the heavy, dark wood door lies a dimly lit entrance adorned with authentic reconstructed skeletons of various animals, serving as unconventional yet intriguing decor—a reflection of the hotel's distinctive character. Chalardcharoen's keen eye for design has resulted in a true masterpiece, evoking a sense of awe akin to stepping into a dark, mysterious fairytale.
After admiring all these impressive skeletons, one comes across the check-in counter—a strong statement piece, much like the rest of the exhibit. It boasts a striking oak surface and antique wood library card catalogue drawers, adding a touch of old-world charm to the visit. The challenge lies in staying focused during check-in, as the eyes wander around the room in search of more discoveries. Visitors often find themselves engrossed in the myriad of artefacts scattered throughout the space. Adjacent to the lobby, the restaurant is an equally impressive space, open not only to guests but also to non-guests seeking to indulge. Here, a staircase spirals to nowhere, and a striking giraffe seemingly emerges from the wall—both becoming social media sensations, elevating the restaurant's fame. Long wooden dining tables contribute to the grandeur, creating an atmosphere that is both unique and inviting.
Beyond Imagination: Exploring The Mustang Blu's Unique Rooms' Aesthetics
The Mustang Blu is an absolute gem where each room dazzles, one after the other. While the price may seem affordable, the hotel's rates still surpass those of many others in the city. However, this hotel epitomises uniqueness and beauty, offering an experience unto itself, and such distinction naturally comes with a price tag. To simplify reservations, the hotel has also made itself available on Airbnb in addition to the typical hotel booking websites. Room rates vary, with prices around 160 pounds per night during lower seasons, but they fluctuate significantly depending on the time of year. Among them, one room stands out above all: room 301. Though pricier, it is undeniably stunning—a spacious abode that resembles more of a suite than a standard room.
Upon opening the door, you're greeted by a wooden dining table, flanked by vintage wooden chairs, each elegantly draped in vibrant yellow velvet fabric. Adjacent to the main entrance sits a strikingly large buffet, adorned with captivating decorations that draw the eye with every glance. To the left, a glass-door cabinet hosts an array of essentials, including slippers, bathrobes, towels, and eco-friendly toothbrushes. Perched atop this cabinet stands the pièce de résistance: a life-sized black cheetah statue, commanding attention with its majestic presence.
The room further boasts a luxurious velvet sofa paired with a marble coffee table, accompanied by a generously proportioned and supremely comfortable bed at its centre. While the room features a beautiful white bathtub openly displayed without doors, the true marvel awaits in the marble bathroom, adorned in rich brown hues with delicate accents of light turquoise. Spanning 65 square feet, the space is bathed in natural light from expansive windows that can be fully opened, leading to a series of small balconies, totalling five in all. The abundant natural light infuses the room with warmth, allowing you to revel in the sun's glow throughout the day. In terms of amenities, simplicity prevails, with the hotel providing only a kettle and a selection of tea bags or instant coffee. Although we consider the room perfection, the absence of a coffee machine leaves a slight pang of disappointment, as it would have truly elevated this space to heavenly heights.
Morning Pleasures: Starting the Day with Sunrise Flavours
In the morning, customers are invited downstairs to the restaurant as in-room breakfast service isn't available. Once there, they can choose from various brunch sets featuring beverages, eggs, fresh fruits, brioche, and jam, along with a diverse range of main courses such as baked chicken, pork, baked sea bass with grilled vegetables, and more. Additionally, non-guests frequent The Mustang Blu to enjoy coffee, tea, and homemade pastries and cakes. However, it's important to note that dining at the restaurant tends to be on the pricier side. Despite this, it remains a charming spot to relax and appreciate the stunning interior while exploring Chinatown.
