TULUM TREEHOUSE: COEXISTING WITH NATURE
Many complain about the lack of authenticity when visiting Tulum, which we can all agree with to a certain extent. However, the city does have a few hidden gems, sometimes harder to find but definitely worth a visit.
One of them is Tulum Treehouse, nestled in the serene surroundings of the Yucatan Peninsula, an amazing dreamweaver house completely concealed behind an inconspicuous entrance in a maze of the wilderness. Pristine. An artsy, comforting mini-heaven.
The dwelling was designed by CO-LAB Design office, interior architect Annabell Kutucu, and local artisans. And they have poured their hearts into it, creating an ambiance that is authentic and raw, with concrete, wood, and other natural elements balancing each other out. It is basically a five-bedroom guesthouse with proximity to a serene oasis.
It was here that we finally grasped the notion of coexisting with nature. The house was erected in the Mayan Jungle, surrounded by rich foliage, providing each room with its own solitude and slice of nature. The guesthouse truly commemorates Mexican culture.
SLOW
We learned that the hotel is part of the Slow Hotel Group, an independent company that creates meaningful places. According to them, as the name suggests, the organisation tries to make meaningful spaces, even if it means going through a lengthy process. Their motto is, "Our sites provide not a "pit stop" away from the frenetic pace of everyday life, but a continual journey of reconnection, of learning to live in harmony with nature, our shared human history, our community, and ourselves, which is inspiring and definitely adds some touches to this project as well."
ORIGIN: WHERE IT ALL STARTED
As per their narrative, Tulum Treehouse started as a home tucked between the tropical jungle and the Caribbean Sea at a time when Tulum was still a tranquil coastal village on the edge of discovery. The Treehouse grew with Tulum, beginning with five beds and a coffee shop and then expanding to include a jungle bar centred on Yucatán flavours, a cultural programme, and an open-air kitchen that eventually became one of Tulum's premier destination diners.
PRIMARY AREAS
Tulum Treehouse really made the effort to create a few rooms for visitors with a clean, geometric, yet raw interior design. In the afternoon, you may sit in the living area and enjoy the exquisite and pleasant natural light. The kitchen, where you may get a cup of water, is a lovely area with windows facing the jungle. At Tulum Treehouse, especially in the afternoon, you can just hear the birds and enjoy the wonderful breeze. The setting is so relaxing and allows us to take a moment to reflect and breathe deeply to take in every breathtaking moment.
The meticulously chosen decor may pique your curiosity as well. There are several intriguing hanging artworks, but there is also a vintage-looking Marshall speaker, wooden coffee tables, accent chairs, and other furnishings that give the entire setting a fantastic dark academia vibe. One might feel like they are in an enchanted faerie world setting.
ROOMS
For rooms, each chamber is distinct from the others. Despite having just five rooms, Tulum Treehouse took care to provide each of them with space, intimacy, and a wonderful view of nature. The rooms are clean and basic, with just the proper amount of everything. In addition, the organic bathroom products have a wonderful aroma. Each corner of the space is thoroughly thought out, from the drinking glasses to the carpeting to the flowers. The rooms are designed with large windows, giving you the impression that you are in the wilderness when inside
THE GOLDEN HOUR
If you have an artistic soul, we recommend spending the golden hour in Tulum Treehouse once in a lifetime. Head to the most beautiful rooftop to see the sunset before dinner. The rooftop provides a breathtaking view of the Mayan Jungle allowing you to witness the glorious sunset. A few minutes that are worth every second.
A JUNGLE RESTAURANT
The time we spent there made us realise that Tulum Treehouse treats everything in their small hotel with the same attention and care. From the cooked breakfast to the accommodations and even their drinks crafted with fresh ingredients, this place has it all. Our advice is to give them a few notes on what you want and let them build something on their own. The bar is as lovely as the rest of the establishment. The hotel also features a very interesting monthly programme with various types of music events, where you may have a drink in the ideal ambiance.
KITCHEN
With everything contained in a little bubble and well maintained, the kitchen is an essential criterion there. The Kitchen at Tulum Treehouse honours the Yucatán's natural beauty as well as the variety of its regional cuisine. Seasonal delicacies are served over an open fire that is totally powered by wood, giving each plate unique flavours. Except for overnight visitors, they are closed during the day and open in the evening for those with meal reservations.
According to them, with time and experience, they have learned what people like and how their cooking on wood adds their own distinctive touch to things.
OUR THOUGHTS
Tulum Treehouse is a real gem among so many hotels that sometimes lack authenticity and soul. This guesthouse doesn’t do things like other businesses. Instead of advertising it, they want to keep things private. This might be the reason why this place doesn’t feel overwhelming. They don’t go the extra mile to become renowned; instead, they let things evolve naturally. The concept feels real and whimsical at the same time, which makes one feel lighter with its simplicity. Tulum Treehouse has a strong core and the right kind of vision. They have strong values and stick to their beliefs which makes it a respite in a green and tranquil paradise. It's a place where people can just be themselves, free and joyful.
